‘Hawks at Oilers
The Blackhawks’ road trip continues this evening in Edmonton, Alberta, as the ‘Hawks take on the Oilers. The ‘Hawks paddled the Oilers on December 16, 9-2. It was such a savage beating, Troy Brouwer had three points, including two goals. The win was the ‘Hawks’ fifth en route to a franchise record nine-game winning streak.
What you see is still what you get with the Urlers. Though Sam Gagne will be back in the line-up for the first time since before the All Star break, he only has 17 points this season, as compared to almost 50 last campaign. Shawn Horcoff is having an off year, and Craig MacTavish might soon kill Dustin Penner. (If so, is the Dustin Byfuglien deal voided?) They’re size-deprived, and with two defensemen among their top-four in scoring, they have 23 less goals for than the Blackhawks on the season.
My money’s on Huet tonight, followed by a back-to-back for Khabibulin in Calgary and Vancouver later this week.
1911 Jerseys Do Lang No Good
Boston beat Montreal on Sunday evening, and the Canadiens lost ex-Blackhawk Robert Lang for the season. Lang underwent successful achilles tendon surgery on Monday, but his impressive abreviated season comes to an end. Through 50 games played, Lang racked up 18 goals and 21 assists. The former seventh round pick of the Kings has been, to this point, a model of health.
The NHL’s Goliath
Not convinced Alexander Ovechkin’s the NHL’s most outstanding player? Consider this: Marian Hossa, Eric Staal and Jeff Carter each have 215 shots on goal this season. They’re tied for second to only Alexander Ovechkin, who has a whopping 323 shots on goal through 49 games. That’s a lead of 108 shots over second place. Patrick Sharp paces the ‘Hawks with 146 shots through 48 games.
Ovechkin also has 36 goals to lead the NHL. Jeff Carter, in second place, has 32.
Pelletier Era Halted
Pascal Pelletier was reassigned to Rockford on Monday. He had four bottled waters and a JuJu Fruit in three games since his January 28th call-up.
Finally, check out Hockeenight’s empassioned defense of Captain Serious. Not only is Toews’ captaincy all right with us, we’re delighted a presumed “off year” will net him about 25 goals and 75 points. Not too shabby.
And, given Henrik Zetterberg’s 12-year deal and others like his, does Toews strike you as a 10-12 year deal in the making? And, is that a good thing?
