Game 6: Blackhawks 4, Flyers 3 (OT)

Of course the Chicago Blackhawks would win the Stanley Cup on a goal no one knew they scored.

Patrick Kane collected the puck along the left wing boards, made a couple juke moves on Kimmo Timonen and fired a low hard shot along the goal line.  The puck stuck under the pad running along the ice and Kane took off on a massive celebration.

Meanwhile, no one else on his team had any idea what the hell was going on.  Antti Niemi reacted as though Kane was coming down to knife him and the rest of the Hawks were looking around for some kind of confirmation.  A few seconds past, the refs dug the puck out from the net, and that was that.

Enjoy it; we all deserve it.

  7. Nick says:

Wow…. just wow. I’m breathless, speechless, when Roenick broke down…wow I lost it. I just got down pouring my heart out on this site on the previous post and lo and behold my fave hawk breaks down on national TV.

This is so amazing. We expected this, but at the same time this is so unexpected. Jonathan Toews hands the cup to Hossa, just amazing. I love it. I love this franchise, this team, hopefully this won’t be the last!

  8. Lee says:

OMG, you have no idea how happy I am!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Dave Morris says:

Like Billy Bob Thornton said in Friday Night Lights….my heart is full.

  11. Deborah says:

Yes Dudes, there are ladies, like myself and sister Jacqueline, who are huge, old-time Hawks Fans and thoroughly love and appreciate the great writing the FF boys deliver. We are ecstatic after last night’s win and can’t wait to celebrate manana at the rally.

    GO HAWKS!!!!!!

  12. Patrick says:

What a great game, year and team. Glad the Hawks were able to bring the Cup home. A few quick thoughts:

    1. What a weird finish, and even though it was the series clincher, it was kind of anti-climactic. I wanted the siren, the lights, the horn, and “the song”. Yea, I know the Hawks were on the road but the confusion around the goal was just kind of weird.
    2. Glad that Kane got it – baby faced assassin, plain and simple.
    3. Loved that Toews gave the Cup to Hossa first – thought it was funny that he didn’t know where he was when he was standing right in front of him.
    4. Okay, so Toews got the MVP (forward) of the Olympic tourney and the Conn Smyth, so does that make him the best player in the world right now then, right?
    5. Was great to see Burish, Hendry, Bickell and Fraser dressed for the handshake line. All but Bickell will get their names on the Cup. Classy move by a classy organization.
    6. The Hawks played a strong game, top to bottom. No major mental lapses that have stuck with me, just happiness.
    7. Roenick breaking down – not sure how I feel about that one. He had some playoffs quotes attributed to him that seemed to go against the organization (such as rooting for SJ and then Philly). I loved him as a player, but if true, not sure what to think. End of the day, I think all is forgiven.
    8. Okay, so the Swiss team that beat the Hawks in the preseason are really the best team in the world right now, because they were playing for some “mythical world title” at the time – can’t remember the name of the trophy though.

Great day to be a Hawks fan – bring on Cupoacolypse! Be good…

  13. Patrick says:

One more thing – with this result, the Campbell and Hossa contracts were worth it!

  14. Bobby Polish says:

Long time lurker, never had anything worth saying, but we can all comment on this amazing feeling. Those terrible seasons of my youth (I’m 23) suddenly seem almost worth it. This feels so good. Thanks for all the great posts and insightful comments through the year.

  15. Lou says:

Roenick took the Money and run even though he was offered the best contract ever by the Hawks at that time… I stood at his first game back with AC and another buddy waving dollars at him and letting him know what we thought and he looked right at us. Believe me he heard us and knew we were pissed. Guilt is an incredibly driving emotion.

Glad it moved Roenick to tears but in the big picture this was about all of us. I know Big Tony wasn’t the only one moved to tears and unable to talk on the phone.

Enjoy this moment, and if its okay with all of you Let’s do it again real soon

  16. Rachel says:

Congratulations! Hossa finally got his Cup, and OT victories are always the sweetest. I can’t rationalize all this; it’s like, is it really over? Did they really win? Great job all around!

  17. Big Tony says:

I suggest all here go and read Rozner today. I bought all 3 papers as keepsakes and read all the coverage, but what Rozner said at the end about Maggie and the ghost of Henri Richard was incredibly moving. Best thing I read today.

  18. AC says:

Wow, still can’t believe it! Maybe it will hit me at the parade tomorrow. Maybe it will hit me on Opening night when they raise the banner, but…Wow!

I don’t care who played poorly or well, the TEAM is the proud owner of a large trophy named after Lord Stanley and that is awesome. Today, I love every one of the players.

  19. Lou says:

AC there was no better way to watch it. I wouldn’t have done it any other way. 20 plus years we have been watching games together. From the days at Pia’s and beating the Bellville Dings to Richter’s sister until last night. Simply Perfect end to a magical season.

I could get very used to this!

  20. tom says:

Campbell ended up tied for the league playoff lead with a +11, although this playoff season has left me less impressed with +/-.

  21. John says:

He also did a terriffic job of keeping that puck inside the Flyers zone before saucering over to Kane for the game-winner.

  22. bobby b says:

    hey john…

well done all season. i suppose you receive a lot of props, but i wanted to thank you for all the interesting reading and analysis. so…thank you.

ps. remember after game two when i was vilified for suggesting we switch up the toews and kane line?
