The Big One

It was only a matter of time.

According to Bob McKenzie, the Hawks and Thrashers have agreed upon a trade.  The Hawks will send Byfuglien, Sopel, Eager, and Akim Aliu to Atlanta for the 24th and 54th picks on Friday, Marty Reasoner (1.15 cap hit) and prospect Jeremy Morin.  It’s still a pending trade but it appears it is just about a done deal.

More details to follow.  Count on that.

Whoa – seems like a good deal to me. Would have loved get rid of Huet and/or get the higher of the two first-rounders, but hey, it’s a start. Know anything about this Jeremy Morin guy? My thinking is that he’s an upgrade to Aliu.

So, does Versteeg go now? My guess is that the Hawks can be a little more patient now, especially since they can qualify their RFA’s, so a little pressure is off.

What’s the next move and what’s the draft look like now for the Hawks?

Good info, and the best place to read about it too…

  2. Josh says:

This is an absolutley brilliant move by StanBow. Buff for a prospect (Morin) and a 1st, sopel eager aliu for a 2nd and a checking center? WHAT A STEAL!

Morin scored 80 pts for Kitchener in the OHL, including 40 goals. Hell of an upgrade over Aliu. He’s 5’10” 189lbs, and was a 2nd rounder last year.

  3. Lou says:

5 Picks in the first two rounds for a good team!!!! Lots of options to pick or package picks to move up. Can build depth. Can package as part of a trade to send a Huet elsewhere to allow us to get into the free agent market if we choose. Lots of options now

And As Big Tony said a few days ago, Buff is at his highest value.

Morin had some nice numbers in junior. Us Kid from NY. and Aliu was sent from AHL to ECHL so maybe the change of scenery will be good for him.

I think we can qualify guys with 5.33 million now free. I think Steeg still goes and maybe Ladd stays now. 24 w two cups is not a bad thing. Sharp is likely staying put.

Vancouver fans must be dancing right now

  4. Big Tony says:

Lou, got your call but my hands were full of sausage at the time.

    Easy there….I’m making dinner.

Oh yeah….good deal as we sold high on two players and cleared about 5-6M and picked up 2 picks. FB is awash with assphlanges losing their shit over this. I can’t wait until Versteeg is dealt…somebody’s head is gonna assplode.

  5. John says:

Eager’s contract hit was meaningless as he currently has no contract. The Hawks cleared closer to $4 mill in cap space with this move.

  6. Big Tony says:

Corrected by the guy who makes the big bucks!!

  7. AC says:

Great move. Aliu really seemed to implode late and had all kinds of character issues. I wish Buff, Eager and Aliu all the best of luck and long prosperous careers, just not against us. Sopel is a player who really works hard and has proven his character, the best to him also.

5 picks in the top 60 in a very highly regarded draft is good news. We can even package a 2nd to get rid of Huet now.

    Well done Stan.

  8. Big Tony says:

I’ll love Buff until the day I die for what he did this post-season, but I prefer to trust the guys who put the team together that WON US THE DAMNED STANLEY CUP rather than lose my shit all over the place.

  9. Big Tony says:

    Oh yeah…..what’s Reasoner’s contract situation?

  10. Lou says:

1.15 cap hit last year of contract

  11. Big Tony says:

Sweet. That makes this trade even better. There’s a 4th liner to play with Fraser and Bickell or whoever.

  12. Jack says:

Buff will be a rock star in Atlanta. The fans will eat him up.

  13. EBW says:

Reasoner is signed for 1 more year at $1.15mm

  14. Lou says:

Buff and Evander Kane could be a neat combo. Kane is a tough kid and a good one. This is good for everyone. I am sure Luongo if flying Buff first class

  15. Brian Davies says:

Yeah, I think this is a great deal. Trade Byfuglien at his highest value, trade Sopel while he’s still healthy, let go of Eager before a potentially ugly contract negotiation, and get rid of a prospect that nobody seemed very high on. Get a reasonably priced veteran center who can fill Madden’s role for half the salary, get a more promising prospect, and two really solid draft picks. Go, Stan!

My only moment of disappointment in this was that when I heard we were getting 1st and 2nd round picks from Atlanta, I had forgotten that they had NJ’s picks from the Kovalchuk deal.

By my figuring, we’re still a long way away from being under the cap, though.

  16. Dave Morris says:

Patrick> Morin is highly rated…his scouting report here:

    StanBow strikes decisively.

    Excellent trade.

  17. Patrick says:

Dave – thanks. This guy reminds me of a young Patrick Kane 😉

How much more cap space needs to be cleared and what’s the next move? Think they can pair Versteeg and Huet up to move to someone? My thinking is no, but you never know.

  18. Patrick says:

And, Duncan Keith wins the Norris… Excellent!
