So we’re down to the final four preseason games and the Hawks final roster spot is still in the same limbo as a week ago: Viktor Stalberg, Jeremy Morin, and Igor Makarov are in a stalemate for the 12th spot.
Basically, the only reason why this has taken so long is because Stalberg hasn’t really given a reason for the Hawks to put him on the opening day roster. It’s fairly obvious the Hawks are hesitant to throw the pressures of a top-6 spot on Morin and would much rather prefer Stalberg as one of their 12 forwards. But if Stalberg continues to uninspire, there might not be much of a choice.
Tomorrow night would be a good start.
–2009 6th round pick David Pacan was kicked off the University of Vermont’s team today for violating the student-athlete code of conduct. Pacan impressed for stretches last year as a true freshmen. He led Vermont rookies in goals with 7. This year, he was going to be counted on to carry a heavier load. Now, not.
Pacan came to terms with the Niagara IceDogs of the OHL and will play out the season there. The IceDogs drafted Pacan two years ago and controlled his CHL rights.
Perhaps more amazing is that Stan Bowman didn’t sign him to an entry-level deal after he was kicked off Vermont.
–Chris Block’s observations from Tuesday night’s tilt against Pittsburgh is just about the best analysis you’ll read this pre-season. The parts about Nick Leddy and Jeremy Morin, in particular, are superb.
