The Rockford IceHogs went 1-1 this weekend. On Friday night, a weekend after sweeping the Abbotsford Heat on the road, the Heat partially returned the favor by beating Rockford 4-1 at the MetroCentre. Wade Brookbank got the IceHogs on the board first with assists from Shawn Lalonde and Kyle Beach. The Heat scored 4 unanswered goals and that was that. Alec Richards made 14 saves on 18 shots.
Jeremy Morin left the game in the 3rd when he was hit by 6’7″ behemoth defenseman Chris Breen. That, right there, is the major drawback of letting a junior eligible player play in the AHL. Fortunately, the injury doesn’t sound too serious though Morin did not play on Saturday night.
On Saturday, the IceHogs fought back from deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 to win in a shootout 4-3. Ben Smith got Rockford on the board with a short-handed goal. Rob Klinkhammer had the assist. Then Klinkhammer added a goal of his own five minutes into the third period. Chris DiDomenico and Brian Connelly assisted on the goal. Five minutes later, Ivan Vishnevskiy scored on the power play. Connelly assisted again with Ryan Potulny also helping.
In overtime, Igor Makarov tipped in a Potulny shot with 45 seconds left for the game winner. Connelly notched his third assist of the game on the play. After the game, head coach Bill Peters credited Makarov with playing his best game of the season.
